Although not many, but there are some anime which have a heavenly world theme or a parallel dimension where gods live there. However, which god themed anime that are considered to be the best according to the fans in Japan? Between August 26 and September 3, Akiba Souken conducted a poll of 491 fans and here are the results.
1. Noragami / 146 votes
Synopsis: In times of need, if you look in the proper place, you may see a mysterious contact number scrawled in red. If you call this phone number, you may hear a young man introduce himself as the Yato God.
Yato is a slight deity and a self-proclaimed “Delivery God, ” who wishes of having countless worshippers. Without a single shrine dedicated to his name, however, his ambitions are not even close being realized. He spends his days and nights doing random jobs for five yen each, until his shinki or weapon partner becomes sick and tired of her useless master and deserts him.
Just as things are looking grim for the god, his fortune changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, apparently saves Yato from an accident, taking the hit for him. Shockingly, she survives, but the incident has triggered her soul to become loose so because of this able to leave her body. Hiyori requires that Yato return her to normal, but after figuring out that he needs a new partner to accomplish this, hesitantly agrees to help him find one. And with Hiyori’s help, Yato’s luck may ultimately be turning around.

Synopsis: Nanami Momozono dreams of living a normal life, just like any other average high school girl. Instead, she must cope with the fact that her deadbeat father accumulated a bunch of gambling debts and abandoned her. And since she can’t afford to pay the rent, she’s now homeless. Despite this unfortunate turn of events, Nanami still maintains a kind heart.
One day in the park, she saves a poor man from a vicious attack, and in a perfect example of how good deeds are rewarded, the man thanks her by giving her his home. The offer sounds suspicious, but beggars can’t be choosers. When Nanami arrives at the man’s home, however, she discovers it isn’t a house at all. It’s a shrine. She learns that the man she saved was actually a god and that by giving her his home, she has now assumed his godhood and all of the duties that go along with it.
The role seems daunting but it turns out that the previous god had a familiar named Tomoe. A powerful and skilled fox demon, Tomoe should be able to help Nanami transition into her new role as a deity… if the two of them don’t kill each other first, that is. Kamisama Hajimemashita follows Nanami’s life as a human god, her quest to win Tomoe’s trust, and the romantic feelings she develops for him along the way.
Kamisama Hajimemashita, or also known as Kamisama Kiss is another best of god themed anime series. This show may fit for shoujo.
3. No Game No Life / 41 votes
Synopsis: No Game No Life is a surreal comedy that centers around Sora and Shiro, hikikomori NEET siblings and the online hardcore gamer duo behind the well-known username “Kuuhaku. ” They see real life as merely another poor game; however, a myterious e-mail challenging them to a chess match changes everything—the brother and sister are plunged into an otherworldly world where they encounter Tet, the God of Games.
The strange god welcomes Sora and Shiro to Disboard, a world where all kinds of conflict—from petty squabbles to the fate of whole countries—are settled not by way of war, but through high-stake games. This system works because of a basic rule wherein each party need to bet something they consider to be of equal value to the other party’s wager. In this peculiar land where the very idea of humankind is reduced to child’s play, the unsociable genius gamer duo of Sora and Shiro have ultimately found a real reason to keep playing games: to unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the gods of this new, gaming-is-everything world.
I’m happy that this show is one of the best god themed anime show since I love it to death, for both story and artwork.
4. Gugure! Kokkuri-san / 32 votes
Synopsis: Kohina Ichimatsu, the self-proclaimed girl doll, called out the fox ghost Kokkuri-san with a shady incantation! But it was a tale of the past where Kokkuri-san surely could answer any question you had. At present, it relies on a certain search engine, but is actually bad at something digital. He was going to possess Kohina, but became concerned about her living all alone and devotes himself to do chores as if he was her mother.
Furthermore, the dog ghost Inugami who is infatuated with Kohina and the old good-for-nothing supernatural raccoon dog Shigaraki choose root themselves with her too!
This show is kind of comedy god themed anime series, but also you will find great slice of life point and almost has heavy meaning in each episodes.
5. Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha. / 28 votes
Synopsis: Awkward, below average intelligence, and shy – these are many of the traits that Inari Fushimi possesses. Even though her weak points, she’s extremely careful of others. She can’t ignore anyone’s asking for help! She has also a very long time crush on Kouji Tanbabashi, who she admires for being cheerful and always hardworking. The problem is, Inari’s incurable shyness makes it challenging to express her feelings for Kouji.
Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha begins with Inari using a shortcut to her school. She happens to find a fox pup that’s going to fall to the river. Even though she’s running late, she just can’t ignore the pup. Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami, the god of the Inari Shrine, is grateful for Inari’s kindness towards the young fox, who happens to be a familiar named Kon. To show her appreciation to Inari, she fulfills one of Inari’s wishes. But the fulfillment of the wish only invites a tough time. To compensate, Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami bestows Inari a small part of her divine power that gives Inari the ability to transform into anyone at will.
Inari now has got a power of a god, even if it’s just a small percentage. Otherworldly beings abruptly take an interest in her, for better or worse. Which kind of adventure awaits Inari, and will she be able to tell Kouji everything that she has kept in her heart for such a long time?

6. Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru / 25 votes
Synopsis: What does it mean as being a hero? Yuuki Yuuna thinks she has learned. As part of the Hero Club in her middle school, Yuuki consistently does her best, likes to help others, and aims to bring smiles to people’s faces, no matter who they are.

Strange and powerful problems are getting close and threatening to destroy the world Yuuki knows and really loves, and it’s up to Yuuki and the Hero Club to stop them. Together with her friends, Yuuki utilizes a special phone app to change into a magical girl and fight against mysterious beings called vertices.

Soul Eater Evans, a Demon Scythe who only seems to care about what’s cool, seeks to become a Death Scythe with the assistance of his straight-laced wielder, or meister, Maka Albarn. The different duo work and study alongside the hot headed Black☆Star and his caring weapon Tsubaki, and also the Shinigami’s own son, Death the kid, an obsessive-compulsive dual wielder of twin pistols Patty and Liz.
Soul Eater centers around these students of Shibusen as they take on quests to collect souls and defend the city from the world’s threats while working together under the snickering sun to become sounder in mind, body, and soul.
