Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation is not a sequel nor contains real story line of the game. It just like you, a gamer who play your favorite game. But then, it suddenly contains sci-fi touch or something, that makes this show is good and bad at the same time. It’s hard to tell whether this is a great show or not, because I’m as a gamer, especially someone who plays Phantasy Star Online 2, somehow I understand what those people think and feel about the game.

Despite this being based on a video game, the concept and storyline isn’t set in the game itself. Rather, the game is appeared as a game until the second half of the show. Moreover, I do believe you don’t really need prior information about the actual game to be able to watch this series as it includes a certain amount of explanation with the game info. It offers a very basic plot, which makes it a simple show to watch.

Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation Review
Phantasy Star Online 2 is the trendiest game to hit the video game industry. Almost all student in Seiga Academy knows about it and play it from time to time, except for Tachibana Itsuki. Unlike his friends, Itsuki doesn’t play any of video games and ended up missing out on this big phenomena. Luckily, he has other wonderful qualities, such as gets good grades, perfect attendance, and delight of his friends, he makes an excellent substitute for any extracurricular activities which make him still can be accepted in the society.
Itsuki’s capabilities attract the attention of student council president, Izumi Rina. While Itsuki could be the perfect example of mediocrity, Rina can be a vision of excellent. She’s beautiful, an amazing athlete, popular, and she has wonderful grades. Not a single thing she cannot do, except for monitor the afterschool activities of the students. Rina then recruits Itsuki as the new vice president of the student council and asks him to play Phantasy Star Online 2. Since the game is an MMO, it has a social factor and she wishes to know if it is affecting the student negatively. But first, Itsuki ought to learn how to play the game that bring him to the new world that he had never seen before.
Just like in the synopsis, it’s not about the story of the game, but the story about people who play the game, thus included this show into slice-of-life genre. But since there is unexpected progress in the half of the show (from episode 6), then this anime should be included into sci-fi and action as well. The story is good, you will find several cliche and mild jokes here. But don’t expect bloody and intense fight scenes, because they are really boring to watch. The only reason I watch this anime until the end, is maybe the slice-of-life aspect, no more no less.
The background and character designs are decent. Nothing special here. But honestly, I’m a little disappointed because they didn’t make the main heroine, Rina-senpai, so cute. She is too plain and simple. She is not so memorable. While the fight scenes are boring. Mostly it’s created by 3DCG but it’s not really intense that will make your heart beats so fast.
Overall, the characters has good development, but still it’s boring to watch because easy to guess. For example our main protagonist, Itsuki, a newbie who become famous so suddenly, acts just like the chosen one, making a mistake, learn from that mistake, and become the better person. We can find this kind of character developments around the corner from the anime show, however, this anime has failed in execution.
Believe me, as a gamer who also play this Phantasy Star Online 2, I fully aware that it’s really hard to become famous and strong in a short time. Yes, I know that this only an anime, a fictional story about the gamer who play this game, but because of that, this show failed to “understand” the players who play the game.
Both opening and ending, they are not for me. Especially the ending which constantly show the cast SORO dancing with chicken idols. Honestly, it’s too embarrassing for me to watch, and also I don’t want to see chicken idols dancing. And about the BGM, I’m sorry I don’t remember how it sounds.
Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation, at the first glance it looks like an action and adventure show. But, if you are an action lovers, you will really hate this show. But if you a fan of slice-of-life or something, maybe this one will work for you, despite the half second show will also ruin your enjoyment at the same time.
