Attack on Titan Review – When Mankind Lives Confined Within Wall

Shingeki no KyojinHow if you live in the era where monstrous and mysterious creatures called “Titan” actually exist. Worse yet, you can see those Titans starting to devour humans that makes humanity was on the bridge of extinction. What would you do? Fight against those monster or just live peacefully within 50 meter walls that was provided by certain organization in order to maintain the survival of mankind?

Attack on Titan can be described as survival action anime that sets in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world where the humankind, that once lived in peace, now should face a last stand situation for survival of the entire race. Attack on Titan’s strong points are the artwork, action, and the soundtrack. This anime looks like nothing more than a survival story of humans vs monsters at the first glance. However, the story shows the audiences much more elements including survival, fantasy, action, suspense, drama, and mystery.

If you an hardcore fan of slice-of-life, romcom, drama, or pure romance who really hate action, gore, or bloody scenes, you better consider this anime never exist! But since the anime is pretty popular in 2013, maybe you want to give it a try. So, what is this…

Attack on Titan Review

Synopsis: The story is set in an alternate world where, 100 years prior to the events of the story, monstrous humanoid creatures called Titans appeared and began devouring and decimating the human population, although there is no apparent purpose for doing so. In reaction, the rest of humanity built three massive, circular walls to protect their entire population and maintain Titans away.

Present time, we meet three young protagonist Eren Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa, and their close friends Armin, as they live within southernmost city at the edge of Wall Maria, the outer wall. However, their peaceful life soon changes when a 60-meter Colossal Titan smashes through the main gate of Wall Maria, making it possible for Titans to freely enter the city and devour every human around the corner, and forcing all survivals who lived inside outer district to retreat behind Wall Rose. And now Eren, Mikasa, and Armin have become a member the military in the hopes of obtaining the skills required to take revenge on the creatures that ruined their peaceful life.

Shingeki no Kyojin Opening

Story: The suspense is really fantastic, yet there is still space for improvement. The anime not only contains epic battles, but also a lot of dialogue (I always feel sorry for audiences whom watch only for action). The anime also contains lots of other elements such as tragic and sad scenes. It surely offers some gore, and will eventually break your heart frequently. The only drawback is maybe, the author really struggles to make some comedic scenes which then most of them failed.

Artwork: How they express the fantasy world is incredibly dramatic and detailed. The dark tones work nicely with the survival theme of the anime as well. The designs of the Titans truly standout and all look unique for the most part, plus the battle action scenes in this anime look really wonderful.

Shingeki no Kyojin Artwork

Character: The character designs are nice as well with their own personalities which make them very memorable. For instance, Eren is hot-head and passionate person, Mikasa becomes very skilled and considered one of the best soldier, while Armin is very genius and becomes a tacticians.

Sound: The OST in the anime is epic. The openings were amazing and surely set the feelings of what was to come from the story. The voice acting is very well done, too.

Overall: 10/10 – Watching Attack on Titan is a great experience. It’s really rare to find this kind of anime today. When the anime industry is filled with harem and idol genre that make you bored, this anime could be your relievers.
